Aristotle (after) - copied by Moses ben Meir ibn Yahya (Spain), Art of Running a Household, late 15th c.
The elegant and graceful illustrations found on this version of Hanhagat ha-Bayit (The Art of Running a Household) were created around 1465 in Hita, Spain, from a translation done in 1373 by Moses ben Meir ibn Yahya in Seville. A delicate mesh of flowers behind the introductory letters is a lovely showcase to the opening to this visually engaging piece, in which the written passage addresses the importance of money, servants, wives, and children. Lines which suggest scroll handles frame the text, contributing to the captivating imagery. Having been protected in the Vatican Library's prestigious Neofiti collection (Neofiti 47, fol. 78 recto), this text is a beautiful reminder of the eloquence acheived by the Jewish community in 15th century Spain.
